The First Impression Audit

I call and visit your business unannounced, the way a new customer would, from the first hello to the last thank you. Then I show you the few changes worth the most.

First conversationFree

A good fit if

  • You own or run a restaurant, boutique, showroom, salon or service business
  • You have front-line people and customers who can choose to go elsewhere
  • You’re ready to lead the change in front of your team, and hold it between my visits
  • You want a candid outside view and a short plan, not a long report

Restaurants are where this started. The same approach carries to any service-driven business where customers can choose to go elsewhere, and the first conversation is where we find out what you’re trying to accomplish.

If you need standardized scoring across dozens of locations, a mystery shopping firm is built for that. This audit is for owners who want a personal read and a plan.

What your customers notice

Customers rarely remember the big things. They remember how they were greeted, how the phone was answered, and whether anyone seemed glad they came, even when they couldn’t tell you why they stopped coming back.

The small things are what move the needle: tone of voice, a smile, an expression, the timing. No single one does it. The combination does, and it’s learned with your team, in person, not from a checklist.

“I just hope they never change.” That’s the verdict this work is built to earn.

What changes

  • Regulars greeted by name, and new guests who feel expected
  • A phone answered like someone wants the reservation
  • A team that knows the two or three things that matter most, and does them on the busiest night
  • Reviews that mention your people by name

I see your business the way a new customer does, without your team knowing when. You hear what I saw first, privately, with a short list of what matters most. Then we bring it to your team together, with you leading in the room.

The process behind it is my own, refined over nearly 25 years on both sides of the counter. You don’t need to learn it. You get the result.

I’m not a chef and I don’t critique recipes. I report the food the way a guest experiences it.

Example of a finding (illustrative, not a client)

“6:40 p.m. on a Friday. I called to reserve a table. Six rings, a rushed ‘please hold,’ then two minutes of kitchen noise. I booked down the street instead. That one call set the stage for the night I was likely to have, and the owner never saw the table leave. It took me ten seconds to hear, and one change to fix.”

There’s an art to a greeting, and I craft it for each business. The right one makes a guest feel expected before they’ve said a word. Busy isn’t an excuse. Busy is when the greeting matters most.

A greeting is only one piece, and no one person can carry it. When the whole team works from the same principles, the rewards add up: not one big night of tips, but many good nights.

What missing them costs

Your likely scenarios, side by side

Each one uses your own numbers for the rest. Ranked by what it costs you in a year.

Where to start

  1. Call your own business at your busiest hour. Note how long it takes for a person to answer, and how it feels.
  2. Write down what a first-time customer or client sees and hears in their first thirty seconds.
  3. Take your last ten new customers or clients and count how many you contacted again.

Your email and numbers come to me, and I may follow up. I never sell or share them. Privacy Policy

Starting numbers are examples to change, not benchmarks, and they show revenue, not profit. Replacing a lost customer takes advertising and time. I’d rather help you never get into that position.

Why I notice

I started in restaurants as a busser, and I’ve been a guest who pays attention ever since. I’ve eaten at most of the restaurants in South Orange County, and I take notes on how I’m greeted, served and thanked in every city I visit. I’m not a chef or an operator. I’m your customer, the person who decides whether to come back.

How we measure success

Every audit starts with a record of where you are today: the calls, the visits, photographs, and your Google and Yelp reviews. On a return visit, I repeat the same calls and visits and compare them with today, so you can see what changed. Many owners also watch average check and tips per shift. I don’t promise a change in either.

Next step

Start with a short conversation

Tell me what you’re trying to accomplish and where you feel you’re falling short. If you aren’t sure yet, that’s a fine place to start. The first conversation is about 30 minutes, it’s free, and I’ll tell you honestly whether I can help.
